I was in the check-out line at Safeway behind this women who was trying to control her two screaming kids. Trying to make her feel better – and in my best Trace Adtkins voice - I told her, “You know, you’re gonna miss this.”
In front of her two kids, she looks up at me and says …… “F-you”
This was one of the funniest stories I have heard in a long time on the radio. The transcript doesn’t do it justice. The jock’s inflection and the long pause before he delivers the payoff line – made it a gem.
This is a morning show host on a country radio station in the south. If you don’t follow country music, then you might not know that You’re Gonna Miss This was one of the biggest country hits of last year, and is all about appreciating the moments in life – as hectic as they may seem.
The genius is that even if you don’t know the song, the bit stands on it’s own. If you do know the song, the bit is even stronger because using his best Trace Adkins voice instantly paints the picture of a kind, gentle man offering advice for a stressed out mom who would be receptive and grateful.
Which makes the plot twist – when she tells him to “F-off” – so much better.
I love how he didn’t go into a tangent about parents swearing in front of their kids, or public use of the f-word. He let the story sink in … even rolling the Trace Adkins song after the story.

Later in the show he used the story to launch a bit about the f-word being used more in everyday language.
But he didn’t spoil the original story by making it into a bit.
He allowed the listener to enjoy it. Chuckle over it. Think about the song in a whole new light.
Then he moved on.
A true Picasso of county radio.
